[[[ONLINE!!]]] Cincinnati Reds vs St. Louis Cardinals live match 01/10/2023

5 hours ago — ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds' bid to become just the third team to make the playoffs following a 100-loss season ended in game No.

Rookie catcher Ivan Herrera went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two walks and three runs scored. Herrera reached base a career-high four times. Cardinals left-hander Drew Rom benefitted from the scoring spree, though he came out of the game two outs shy of qualifying for the win. Rookie infielders Masyn Winn (one hit, two RBIs) and Jose Fermin (one hit, one walk, three RBIs) also drove in runs as did first baseman Luken Baker (1-for-3, double, two RBIs, two walks). Rom, who threw 90 pitches, allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out seven and gave up a home run. The seven strikeouts matched his career high. Marte broke for the plate upon Herrera’s throw to second base. However, second baseman Tommy Edman stepped in front of the base, caught the incoming throw and fired it right back to Herrera in time for a bang-bang play at the plate. Home plate umpire Dan Bellino called Marte out at the plate. The Reds aggressively opted to use their challenge in the second inning and challenged both the out call and whether Herrera blocked the plate. Upon review, the call stood and Herrera was ruled to have given the runner a lane to the plate as required. The play ended the inning and kept the Reds scoreless through the first two innings and having burned through their challenge. The 22-year-old right-hander earned Minor League Baseball Double-A All-Star honors earlier in the week, but the circumstances surrounding the game and the playoff hopes made it an incredibly short leash for Phillips. Reds manager David Bell, also a former Cardinals bench coach, pulled Phillips in favor of the bullpen after the first three batters. Phillips became the first pitcher to walk the first three batters of a game without throwing a strike since the New York Mets’ John Maine on May 15, 2010. Miami’s Pablo Lopez was the most recent major-league starter to leave a game without throwing a strike when he hit the Atlanta Braves’ Ronald Acuna Jr. on the first pitch and got ejected on July 2, 2021. Herrera then followed with a double to the left field wall that also drove in a pair of runs. Walker and Herrera were the first two batters Reds reliever Fernando Cruz faced after he replaced Phillips. Two batters later, after a Richie Palacios groundout, Baker swatted the third double of the inning to left field and drove in the fifth run of the frame. The Cardinals hadn’t hit three doubles in the first inning of a game since April 19, against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
